Technical Note

How Authority Lock Works

A technical note on separating technical ability from the right to decide or commit.

The purpose

Authority Lock protects a business boundary when a supported action reaches a consequential decision.

Inputs

A useful authority check needs the actor, objective, proposed action, relevant policy or mandate, applicable evidence and the current scope of delegated authority.

In scope

When the proposed decision is inside the defined authority, the configured execution path may continue.

Out of scope

When the proposed decision exceeds the boundary, the action pauses and the consequential choice is escalated to the appropriate person.

Exceptions

A one-time exception should remain scoped to the specific decision unless an authorised person changes the underlying policy.

Record

The relevant evidence, boundary, decision and outcome can then be retained through the Decision Ledger.
