What Should an AI Be Allowed to Decide for a Business?
The difficult question is not what AI can do. It is what AI should be allowed to decide.
The difficult question is not what AI can do.
It is what AI should be allowed to decide.
AI systems increasingly have the technical ability to research, communicate, update systems and execute business processes. Technical capability, however, does not create organisational authority.
A useful autonomy ladder
A business can separate Observe, Advise, Create, Execute, Operate and Autopilot. The degree of independence can increase while the underlying decision boundary remains fixed.
Consequential choices need an owner
A message draft and a contractual commitment are not the same kind of action. A research recommendation and a pricing exception do not carry the same organisational consequence.
What good governance should preserve
The objective, evidence, applicable policy, decision owner, scope, exception and outcome should remain inspectable.
The design principle
More autonomy should increase independence inside an approved boundary. It should not silently rewrite the boundary itself.
