What is a business ontology?

A business ontology makes concepts and their relationships explicit so people and systems can interpret information consistently. It can describe what an opportunity, offer, owner or commitment means and how those concepts relate within a business domain.

Meaning, not merely storage.

A database may store an opportunity’s value and stage. An ontology addresses what those terms mean and how they relate to other concepts. W3C’s OWL overview describes ontologies as formal vocabularies whose definitions are expressed through relationships.

A practical business model may use different technologies. Using the word ontology does not establish that a product implements OWL, a particular graph store or automated logical inference.

One word. Two interpretations.

Sales may call an opportunity qualified when the buyer fits the intended audience. Finance may require a signed commercial commitment before including it in a committed forecast.

The useful task is to make both meanings explicit, identify their purpose and avoid treating one label as though it represents the same state everywhere.

Ontology, taxonomy and knowledge graph.

A taxonomy primarily classifies concepts. An ontology can express richer meanings and relationships. A knowledge graph represents connected information; a graph is not automatically a complete ontology.

These tools can work together. Choose the required meaning, constraints and operations before declaring a technology label sufficient.

How Dainin applies the concept.

The CEOS architecture discusses business representation, definitions, evidence and decisions alongside personal and organisational context. Those relationships help explain why a task exists and what information should inform it.

Dainin-specific contributions must be described from their own specifications. Ontology remains an established technical field, not a concept exclusively owned by Dainin or a competitor.
